COAST RANGE FOOTHILL WOODLANDS
In central California, foothill woodlands are dominated by Coast Live Oak Series on the wetter, coastal side of the range, and by Blue Oak or Interior Live Oak series in the inner, drier areas. Valleys are commonly associated with Valley Oak Series. Stands of Canyon Live Oak Series are found in moister canyons. Other woodlands include California Buckeye, Coulter Pine, Coulter Pine-Canyon Live Oak, Foothill Pine, and Tanoak series. Bishop Pine Series occurs in limited areas.
In northern California, foothill woodlands merge with the mixed evergreen or redwood forests . Forests may be dominated by the Black Oak, California Bay, Canyon Live Oak, Douglas-fir, Douglas-fir - Tanoak, Redwood, or Tanoak series.
Riparian corridors can include woodlands, thickets, and scrubs of the California Sycamore, Canyon Live Oak, Coast Live Oak, Fremont Cottonwood, or Arroyo Willow series.
Consisting of taller, woodier thickets with shrubs with thick, leathery leaves compared to coastal sage scrub, the chaparral is often dominated by species of Arctostaphylos and Ceanothus. Chaparral composition varies greatly and can be assigned to many series including the Bigpod Ceanothus, Bigpod Ceanothus- Birchleaf-mountain Mahogany, Bigpod Ceanothus-Hollyleaf Redberry, Blue Blossom, Chamise, Chamise-Bigberry Manzanita, Chamise- Black Sage, Chamise-Wedgeleaf Ceanothus, Chamise-White Sage, Chaparral Whitethorn, Cupleaf Ceanothus-Fremontia-Oak, Deer Brush, Eastwood Manzanita, Hairyleaf Ceanothus, Red Shank- Chamise, Scrub Oak, Scrub Oak-Chamise, Shrub Interior Live Oak, Shrub Interior Live Oak- Shrub Canyon Live Oak, Shrub Interior Live Oak- Chaparral Whitethorn, Wedgeleaf Ceanothus, or Woollyleaf Manzanita series. Sheltered valleys may contain foothill woodlands.
